The Great Commission
A Divine Mandate for Transformation in Our Time
Embracing Christ’s call to make disciples in the
life of the Orthodox Church.
As Orthodox Christians, we inherit not only the ancient Faith and sacred traditions of our forebears, but also a living, incarnational call: the Great Commission. Rooted in the words of our Lord in Matthew 28:19–20, this divine command is far more than a directive to evangelize. It is a call to make disciples, to baptize, and to nurture the faithful in the mystery of Christ’s love.
This mandate is not optional.
It is the heartbeat of the Church’s mission in every generation — including our own.
What Is the Great Commission?
At its heart, the Great Commission is the command of Jesus Christ to His disciples:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…”
(Matthew 28:19–20)
For the Orthodox Christian, these words are not abstract. They speak of an all‑encompassing, transformative love — a love that invites every believer to participate in the renewal of the faithful through a deep, living encounter with God.
The Great Commission is not a call to “sell” a message. It is a call to share the fullness of salvation, where discipleship is:
-
personal and communal,
-
heartfelt and historically rooted,
-
lived in the Church and expressed in love.
Why Orthodox Christians Embrace This Divine Mandate
Orthodoxy teaches that the Christian life is not static.
It is a dynamic journey toward union with God, shaped by grace, synergy, and the life of the Church.
Mystery & Incarnation
Christ’s Incarnation is the ultimate act of divine love.
To follow the Great Commission is to become living icons of that love — allowing grace to transform every encounter.
Living Tradition
Our liturgical life, sacraments, and ascetic practices are not relics.
They are vibrant expressions of a living Tradition that equips us to share Christ authentically.
Orthodox evangelization is not about numbers — it is about inviting souls into the life of God.
Community & Discipleship
The Great Commission is inherently communal.
We gather souls, nurture them in the truth, and allow the Holy Spirit to work through each person.
Discipleship is formed not only by individual belief, but by the shared life of the Church.
Thus, for us, the Great Commission is not an external task or a slogan.
It is the essence of Christian life — expressed in every prayer, every deed, every act of love.
How We Fulfill the Great Commission
At the Great Commission Corps, we have dedicated ourselves to equipping believers and parish leaders to live out this sacred mandate.
Authentic Orthodox evangelization must be both ancient and innovative — rooted in Holy Tradition, yet attentive to the needs of our time.
Here is how we serve the Church:
1. Deep, Contextual Discipleship
Our flagship formation pathways offer comprehensive training in both the theological foundations and practical applications of the Orthodox life.
These courses help the faithful:

-
cultivate a life of prayer and virtue,
-
translate the mystery of the Faith into daily practice,
-
and grow as disciples who can guide others.
2. Transformative Learning
We foster a supportive, vibrant learning environment where:
-
questions are welcomed,
-
experiences are shared,
-
and every member is encouraged to grow deeper in Christ.
3. Practical Ministry Tools
Our work extends beyond teaching.
We provide turnkey ministry solutions that help parishes integrate evangelization and discipleship into daily life:
-
step‑by‑step discipleship pathways,
-
digital & print resources,
-
parish guides,
-
and practical tools for clergy and lay leaders.
Every resource is designed to lighten the load on clergy and empower the faithful.
Every Step Toward the Gospel Is a Step Toward Christ
To participate in the Great Commission is to enter a holy paradox:
you become both a disciple and a witness,
a learner and a teacher,
a recipient of grace and an instrument of God’s love.
This is the life to which every Orthodox Christian is called.
